NOTE: The Fay Farm‘s CBD Rejuvenation Lotion was gifted to me as a member of Chronic Illness Bloggers free of charge in exchange for an honest, unbiased review. All views in this post are my own and I have in no way been influenced by the company.
I haven’t forayed into reviewing body products before but I jumped at the chance to be able to try it and to share this product with you all in partnership with the Chronic Illness Bloggers network. It’s very unusual and sounds absolutely perfect for many of us spoonie types.
Handily it arrived just in time for a bad episode health wise for me – the perfect time to put it to the test! Regular readers will know I was at home sick as I was in a lot of pain from my conditions and multiple dislocations.
I’d not heard of the company, The Fay Farm before so when first invited to try it, of course, the very first thing I did was visit their website and have look at their products and ethos.
The Fay Farm produce a range of natural body care products including an extensive line of natural shea body butters and hemp oil based products including salves and muscle rubs as well as a small range of products made with CBD oil, the Rejuvenation Lotion I have is from this CBD range and contains cannabidiol oil or CBD oil.
None of the products in the Fay Farm range contain any parabens, alcohol, mineral oil, or phthalates so if you avoid any of those you’ll be happy here.
I’m naturally very sceptical about trying things. As a spoonie I’ve been
targeted by all sorts of ‘woo’ sellers over the years. Every kind of snake oil you can think of I’ve had it suggested to me or thrust at me which is one of the reasons I lean towards such a scientific outlook in my beauty therapy and make-up as well as in health and daily life. As a result of this you might be wondering why it is I decided to try this out? Well, as it turns out there is quite a lot of science behind cannabinoids. The human body even has something called the ‘endocannabinoid system’ in which the brain and immune system even produce cannabinoids of their own.
So What is Cannabidiol?
If you haven’t heard of it, CBD is a cannabinoid. Cannabinoids are derived
from cannabis and over 60 types of cannabinoids have been identified, but two main types have been studied; CBD & THC.
The most well-known ingredient, THC, is responsible for the high, whereas CBD is responsible for many of the healing effects.
In fact, multiple studies published in medical literature suggest that CBD can be effective in easing the symptoms of conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, movement disorders, chronic pain, nausea, neuropathic pain, chemotherapy side effects and inflammatory bowel disorders.
Unlike cannabis, CBD on it’s own is also legal in the UK (since 31st July 2015).
If you have EDS like me you might be aware of the recent Coronation Street storyline involving the character Izzy. Izzy who has the condition turned to illegal street cannabis for relief of her pain. CBD can provide us with all the alleged benefits (legally in the UK I can’t say it will or will not help with any specific condition despite the evidence) of cannabis with none of the legal issues.
The Rejuvenation Lotion is formulated with the relief of joint and muscle pain in mind and its other ingredients reflect that notion. They include a selection of wonderfully moisturising oils; hemp oil, grape seed oil, apricot kernel oil, argan oil (sometimes called Moroccan oil), white sesame oil, and jojoba oil. Other ingredients are magnesium, fennel, licorice, turmeric, and relaxing valerian.
All of these herbal ingredients and oils create a strong, unique and slightly medicinal scent that fades nicely once applied. I really like it personally but my mother tried some too when she was visiting and wasn’t taken with it – she did say she was very impressed at how moisturised her hands felt after using it though!
As someone who hasn’t had much success with other muscle rub type products (Deep Heat makes my skin feel like it’s being flayed alive while topical ibuprofen gels don’t do anything at all) I was pleasantly surprised to find that this one did seem to help. I’ve also found it quite relaxing to use. I’ve mainly been using it on my wrists, shoulders and knees/calves. It doesn’t take away the pain – nothing really ever does or has. But it does seem to help with it and knock it down a couple of bars to a more tolerable level meaning I’ve been more able to sit down and write and generally do things.
I love that the product comes with a pump dispenser as I can never ever squeeze tubes or bottles properly with my bendy hands and have thrown out my shoulder before now trying to shake up a bottle of ketchup! It’s also much more hygienic than a pot.
